Massachusetts’ Performance in Elder Abuse Protection

A recent study by WalletHub evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine which offer the best protection against elder abuse. The study assessed each state based on three key dimensions: prevalence, resources, and protection. These dimensions were further broken down into 16 relevant metrics, including the share of elder-abuse, gross-neglect and exploitation complaints, financial elder-abuse laws, and the availability of eldercare organizations and services.

Massachusetts emerged as a leader in safeguarding its elderly population, ranking 2nd overall in the study. The state achieved high marks across all three dimensions:

• Prevalence: Massachusetts reported a lower share of elder-abuse, gross-neglect, and exploitation complaints, indicating a relatively lower prevalence of such issues compared to other states.
• Resources: The state offers robust resources dedicated to elder care, including a high number of eldercare organizations and services per capita. This ensures that seniors have access to the support they need.
• Protection: Massachusetts has comprehensive financial elder-abuse laws and effective elder-abuse task forces, contributing to its strong protective measures.

These factors collectively highlight Massachusetts’ commitment to protecting its senior residents from abuse and exploitation.

In contrast, the study identified several states with significant room for improvement in elder abuse protection. The states ranking lowest in the study were:

1. South Carolina: Ranked 51st, South Carolina had high prevalence rates and limited resources dedicated to elder care, resulting in inadequate protection for seniors.
2. Wyoming: At 50th place, Wyoming faced challenges due to a lack of comprehensive elder-abuse laws and insufficient eldercare services.
3. Montana: Ranking 49th, Montana exhibited high rates of elder-abuse complaints and lacked sufficient protective measures and resources.

These rankings suggest a pressing need for policy reforms and increased investment in eldercare resources in these states to better protect vulnerable senior populations.
